RADCOMP Trial: Proton vs. Photon Therapy for Breast Cancer, What the Results Mean

What Was Studied
The trial enrolled patients with locally advanced breast cancer requiring comprehensive regional nodal radiation. Half received standard photon (X-ray) radiation; the other half received proton beam therapy. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events, heart attack, cardiac death, or need for coronary intervention.
Why It Matters
Breast cancer radiation can expose the heart to radiation dose, particularly when treating the left side or internal mammary lymph nodes. Proton therapy’s Bragg peak allows radiation to stop precisely at the target, substantially reducing the dose to the heart and lungs compared to conventional photon techniques.
