Privacy Policy
How We Handle Your Information.
Last updated October 6, 2026.
This policy explains what information The Cancer Project collects through thecancerproject.org, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information you give us
Contact form. When you send us a message, we receive your name, email address, subject, and message. Your message is delivered to our team by email so we can reply. The website keeps a short record of your name, email address, the date, and whether you asked for our newsletter, but not your message.
Story submissions. When you share your story, we receive your name, email address, story title, the cancer type if you choose to give it, your story, and your permission for us to contact you. Your submission is saved as an unpublished draft for our team to review, and a copy is emailed to our team. Nothing is published without your approval. The website also keeps a short record of your name, email address, the date, and whether you asked for our newsletter.
Newsletter. We add you to our mailing list only if you choose to, either by signing up with your email address or by checking the newsletter box on one of our forms. We save your email address, your name if you gave it, and the date, and we send newsletters through our email newsletter provider. Every newsletter includes a link to unsubscribe at any time, and you can ask us to remove you from the list.
Health information
This website is not a medical service and is not meant to collect medical records. Please do not send diagnoses in detail, medical record numbers, insurance information, or similar details through our forms. If you choose to describe your own health experience in a story, we use it only to review your submission and, with your approval, to publish your story. You can ask us to remove a published story at any time.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type, and the pages visited, to keep the site running and secure. The site uses basic cookies needed for it to work. We may use analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, to understand how visitors use the site as a whole.
Some pages include content from other services, such as YouTube videos, Spotify episodes, and Instagram posts. Those services may set their own cookies and collect information under their own privacy policies.
How we use information
We use the information we collect to reply to your messages, review and publish stories with your permission, send newsletters to people who sign up, understand and improve the website, and keep it secure.
How we share information
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the website, such as our hosting, email, newsletter, and analytics providers, and only as needed for them to do that work. We may also share information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep messages and submissions only as long as we need them to respond, to review and publish stories, or to meet legal obligations.
Your choices
You can ask us to show you, correct, or delete the information you have given us, or to remove a story you shared. You can unsubscribe from newsletters at any time using the link in each email.
Children
This website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect the information we receive. No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure.
Other websites
Our website links to other websites. Their privacy practices are their own, and we encourage you to read their policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last changed.
