A Common Amino Acid May Help the Immune System Detect Cancer
New research from Rockefeller University, published in the journal Cell, suggests that arginine, a common and inexpensive amino acid found in protein-rich foods, plays a critical role in helping the immune system identify cancer cells and fight viral infections.
The study found that when arginine levels are low, cells struggle to produce MHC-1, a protein that alerts the immune system to threats like mutated cells and invading viruses. Without enough MHC-1, cancer cells can effectively hide from immune detection. In mice, arginine-rich diets led to fewer colon tumors and milder viral infections, and even supplementing arginine after infection improved outcomes.
Why It Matters
Arginine levels naturally decline with age, which may help explain why older adults are more vulnerable to certain cancers and severe viral infections. The researchers suggest that arginine supplementation could potentially be tested alongside immunotherapies or given to high-risk populations, though human clinical trials have not yet been conducted.
